Fire Shaper Hot yoga is performed in a hot room that is heated to very specific conditions. Our Fire Shaper studios are controlled by state of the art equipment designed to achieve the perfect temperature every time. Fire Shaper Hot Yoga refers to a very specific form of yoga that comes from a specific lineage in India. “Hot Yoga” embraces the concepts of health, and healing with special alignments and name pronunciations as well as purposeful sequencing of postures to produce very specific affects. It is not simply adding heat to a room where one practices some form of yoga. In our Fire Shaper studios the temperature and humidity must be within certain guidelines, not too cold, not too hot but, just right to enhance the opening of the human body like a lotus flower blooming open. The nervous system releases tension in this environment and allows for the physical and neurological relaxation of the cells. It is in this state that the body may be molded like warm clay and cleansed from the inside out. You may find various studios offering “heated” yoga because “Hot Yoga” has become very popular. These “heated” yoga classes are not the same and generally the studios that offer these classes have very little knowledge about the effects of heat and humidity on the body as well as having little or no knowledge of where “Hot Yoga” comes from or what it really is. A popular comment that you may hear from these other studios is “…we generate our own heat because of the how much we move, the way we breathe and the powerfulness of the practice…” To an extent that is true but, it is not the same and does not “mimic” the practice of “Hot Yoga”. In our studios we embrace the origins of “Hot Yoga” as well as combine a number of different styles and practice them in the proper “Hot” environment which allows for a truly different experience. However, we love and enjoy many forms of yoga, even those not hot, and from time to time we hold special events and workshops in a room temperature environment so that we may all enjoy these different experiences.

Students notice physical as well as mental and emotional benefits when practicing in a heated room. With regular practice, you will discover how using your breath (Pranayama), releasing your tension and remaining on your mat for the entire class builds incredible self-discipline and fosters tremendous will-power, endurance and perseverance. The heat is designed to allow the human bodies physiology to relax. Once a certain temperature and environment is reached the body will unwind from the inside out. It is a calming neurological reaction that provides this change. As the tissues of the body soften and the nervous system relaxes the yoga practitioner will find it much easier to deepen their practice and access areas that they normally would have a difficult time getting to. A simple obvious effect of the heat is sweating which, releases toxins (acids) through the skin (your largest excretory organ). However, sweating is only a small part of “Why the Heat”. The temperature and environment must be very specific and here in our Hot Yoga studios we use state of the art technology to achieve the perfect environment nearly every time. It takes experience and knowledge to do this and that is one thing we are not short on.

Fire Shaper is one of the few studios in Australia to employ 'Far Infra Head' panels - a hygienic, comfortable heat that mimics the energy of the sun without the harmful rays. The muscles become warm, blood moves easily to nourish and heal cells, and the deep sweat leaves students feeling cleansed and refreshed. At Fire Shaper Hot Yoga studios, we use state of the art technology to achieve the specific temperature and environment for every class. Fire Shaper utilizes Far Infrared Radiant (FIR) panels, which produce a heat that is safe, non-invasive and natural. Rather than pumping 'hot air' into the space, the panels emit a 100% safe beam of heat that is absorbed deep into our cellular matrix similar to the warmth we feel in the normal environment outdoors. This form of heat not only feels great but is also extremely therapeutic.

FIR heat is a form of thermal energy. It is the warmth you feel penetrate your skin when you are outside in the sun. FIR light should not be confused with ultraviolet light, which causes sunburn and damage to your skin. The same technology is used in saunas, to keep premature babies warm and is very safe and healing. FIR heat is capable of penetrating deep into the human body, gently elevating the body's surface temperature and activating major bodily functions. Read Less

It is best to include regular water intake into your every day lifestyle and diet. Sipping water throughout the day is the best way to absorb liquid and help create a happy digestive system. This is also a great way to prepare for hot yoga. Have an extra few glasses in the hour leading up to your class, and you'll be ready to sweat!

We also recommend you keep an empty stomach a couple hours before class. If it is an early morning class, a piece of fruit, juice or shake prior to class will allow you to remain energized without feeling 'over full' during the postures. If you have just woken up prior to class (for our 6am classes), try hot water and lemon as this is absorbed quickly into the body and helps increase hydration in a shorter time period.
Our recommendations for hydration before, during and after exercise are as follows:
1. At least 2 hours prior to hot yoga practice drink minimum 500ml of water (coconut water may be substituted).
2. In hot yoga, we wait approximately 20-25 minutes (warm up) prior to drinking in order to create the desired conditions internally for ultimate detoxification benefits. It is best after the warm up to drink small sips of water as needed, as many of the compressions and balances in yoga become difficult if too much water is in the digestive system.
3. After class it is important to restore the correct balance of electrolytes, minerals and other essential cellular fluids which may be lost during practice. Again, water or coconut water is fantastic however an electrolyte substitute may also be added for a speedy recovery.
4. Regular yogis benefit from ensuring they remain hydrated during the day and night as part of lifestyle habit, not just prior to a hot yoga class. And remember, a good quantity of the water you intake comes from the types of food you consume (vegetables and fruit etc.) as well as water itself.

Hot Yoga practice is stimulating and cleansing on many levels. There are several benefits including stress reduction, increased blood circulation which stimulates the heart to strengthen its contractions, which is exercise for the heart muscle itself. As a result, the heart pumps efficiently thereby lowering blood pressure. Hot Yoga also improves flexibility and strength. After class you will feel energized, rejuvenated, and cleansed. In essence, the heat is a form of cardiovascular conditioning. The heat aids in detoxification, increases blood flow to speed up metabolic processes of vital organs, glands, and mobilizing toxins for elimination. Heat stimulates fat receptors, activating fat stores and facilitating fat loss and releasing these fat-soluble toxins. Additional responses of the heat include, the stimulation of white blood cell production, boosting the immune system, promoting relaxation, and an increase in healing injuries and disease symptoms. Overall, the body’s response to heat strengthens, detoxifies, and heals, which in turn creates a sense of health and well-being. Read Less

Yoga is not only about flexibility, this is myth. Emotional, physical and mental barriers can manifest as 'tight muscles' which eventually will be released with regular yoga practice, however this is more of a 'side effect' of yoga rather than an immediate requirement. The only thing you need to start yoga is the desire to live a happier, healthier life and a commitment to turn up to class.

Flexibility is something you will gain through yoga practice. You don’t have to be flexible to start your practice. Yoga will allow you to lengthen and expand, and release toxins that build up during these activities. Whether you can touch the floor or not, the ultimate benefit of yoga is to harmonize body, mind and spirit in a healthful physical practice. A common miss-conception is that you have to be flexible to participate in a Yoga class. You do not need to be flexible and usually most of our students are not flexible at all in the beginning. Through this practice you will quickly gain more flexibility as the heat and the sequencing of the postures will provide you with a much different experience than you might have had in the past with stretching and flexibility. No it is not the same. The heat in our studio is specifically designed to meet certain criteria and is held to very tight standards. Not only does the environment need to be in a specific range but, the practice itself is special. of a material designed to be used outdoors in wet areas to keep those areas safe and clean for people. This special material is non-porous and is anti-microbial resisting the growth of anything considered un-friendly. You will notice it looks like "squashed spagetti" and has a very unique profile. It is designed specifically as such so that the floor can be quickly and thoroughly cleaned all the way through to the bottom. There is no smell, no funk and no junk... Fire Shaper chooses this option over hard wood floors due to our concerns for you to have a safe, comfortable, and non-slip hot yoga experience. We take your practice, your health and your environment very seriously. We believe strongly in the hygiene of all our Fire Shaper studios and if you've been with us since our beginnings you would know that all of our children have grown up in our studios playing and enjoying the students that practice at Fire Shaper. Hygiene is also the major reason that it is REQUIRED that all students practice on large bath towels and stay on their mats at all times. It is policy at Fire Shaper that students must keep their sweat and stuff on their own towels and mat. Just a mat by itself is not good enough to capture all the sweat and toxins that release from your body hence we recommend at least 2 large towels for your practice. Besides, you can enjoy your practice more knowing that you have your own personal and comfortable space to practice on :) Read Less

Why Fire Shaper hot... and how to control core body temperature in athletes

There is a science to why the heat and humidity in the yoga room must be within certain parameters in order to get the most desirable effect on the body. Your skin acts like a Read More

radiator in your car. As blood gets too hot it will go to the skin to get cooled down and then be sent back into the body to go to wherever it is needed the most. During your hot yoga practice you are purposefully manipulating the flow of blood throughout the body in a strategic healthful way. Warmed up blood will still go to the skin to get cooled down but, in a true hot yoga room the evaporative effect is less harsh and you will not feel cool and will not experience the "chill" effect as you would in a warm yoga room. In this hot yoga practice, the warmed up blood is used as a tool to loosen the body and relax the nervous system. In a "warm" yoga room the body has to heat up almost exclusively via muscle exertion and the effects of this process generally does not go as deep and will only slightly affect the nervous system if at all.

What is interesting is that body cooling rules for people, situations, and activities are quite different when given different circumstances and goals. For example, you would not want the high school football or tennis team to play in a hot room while playing a game or having a practice. Certainly the heat would impact performance and of course safety.
Same would apply if you were an aged person sitting back at your local market on a blistering hot day. It wouldn't be the best environment nor the safest for that person to be in and quite often people in these circumstances can experience heat stress. Yet apply the proper heat and humidity into your hot yoga practice where you strategically and methodically practice yoga asana, and you get an incredible life enhancing experience.

The effects heat and humidity have on the human body are incredible and over the years Dr. John has worked with people from all walks of life like the US Military, USA Summer Olympic teams, and huge multi-billion dollar corporations to the friendly grandma down the road all to help them find their best performance or to simply improve their quality of life by improving their body cooling.
